A vehicle chase through Bennett Valley on Friday night began when a deputy spotted a convicted felon who had violated his parole, according to the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office.
When the deputy tried to stop the driver, the suspect sped away and threw a gun out of his car window, said Lt. Tim Duke of the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office.
"A good Samaritan witnessed this and actually turned in the gun at the time that the pursuit was taking place," Duke said.
During the chase through Santa Rosa, the suspect rear-ended a vehicle at Hoen Avenue and Summerfield Road. Eventually, deputies initiated a maneuver designed to make the suspect's car stall, and it worked, Duke said. He continued to resist capture, but deputies made the arrest at Montgomery and Kashmir drives.
The suspect, John Beckwith, was booked into Sonoma County Jail on Friday on five charges, including evading with disregard for safety, receiving stolen property, being an ex-felon carrying a firearm and DUI with alcohol or drugs resulting in bodily injury, according to a jail official. No bail amount has been set, she said. Beckwith's age and city of residence were not available.
