Witnesses: Staggering, drunken man hit, injured crossing Ukiah road

A Ukiah man who witnesses said was staggering intoxicated across the road was struck and injured by a motorist on Thursday night, the CHP said.

Thomas Folger, 59, was airlifted to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with what authorities said were moderate injuries in the wake of the 7:55 p.m. crash on South State Street, the CHP said.

He was in serious condition at Memorial Hospital on Friday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Witnesses said Folger was "extremely intoxicated" as he walked near the airport on the south end of town, the CHP said. He then staggered across the road outside of any crosswalk and was struck by a northbound driver, the CHP said.

The driver, Gary Nevill, 64, had been unable to see Folger on the darkened road and struck him with the left side of his Toyota Tundra pickup, the CHP said. Neville, a Ukiah resident, was uninjured.
