Hit-and-run driver sought in wreck that closed Highway 12 in Santa Rosa

Santa Rosa police were seeking the public's help in identifying the driver in a hit-and-run traffic collision Saturday morning on Highway 12 near Brush Creek.

One lane of westbound Highway 12 between Brush Creek Road and Farmers Lane remained closed late Saturday as police investigated.

The incident involved two vehicles traveling west on the road about 200 feet west of Brush Creek, and one of the drivers fled the scene on foot, said Sgt. John Cregan.

One of the cars knocked over a utility pole, downing power lines and causing a power failure in the surrounding area, but PG&E has since restored residents' electricity, police said.

One of the drivers, an unidentified man driving a red "classic" Chevy Impala, was hospitalized "with moderate to significant injuries," Cregan said.

The other person, whose description and gender were not available, was driving a newer model black Mercedes, Cregan said.

Detectives were asking for anyone who may have seen the collision, the car driving in the area before the wreck or anyone fleeing the area on foot to call 543-3636.

It's unclear whether the other driver was male or female.
