Attendance was 48,401, the largest baseball crowd at the Coliseum since an A's-Giants game drew 53,974 on June 27, 2004.

Bartolo Colon made his ninth division-series start, tying him for seventh most all-time. At 40 years, 133 days, Colon became oldest Oakland pitcher to start a postseason game, and the second-oldest Athletics pitcher after Philadelphia's Jack Quinn in the 1929 World Series.

Colon had not hit a batter all season until plunking Detroit's Torii Hunter, the second batter of Friday's game.

Cespedes' second-inning triple was the A's first in the postseason since Adam Melhuse hit a three-bagger against the Red Sox in the 2003 ALDS.
