Santa Rosa police Monday continued to search for an unidentified driver who ran from a car following a hit-and-run crash Saturday on Highway 12.

The driver of the other car, a pristine red 1958 Chevrolet Impala, remained hospitalized Monday, said Santa Rosa Sgt. Brad Conners.

That driver, a 67-year-old Santa Rosa man, had headed out early Saturday morning in his beloved classic car for a cup of coffee, family members told police.

At about 6 a.m., heading west into Santa Rosa before the "S" turns approaching Farmers Lane, a black Mercedes came up behind him, said Conners. "We think the Mercedes probably was speeding and came up on the Impala."

It appeared the Mercedes hit the Impala and the two cars spun out of control. The Impala was totalled.

The Mercedes stopped in the yard of a nearby home.

At least one person reported seeing a man running south across Highway 12 from the scene. Officers have interviewed the owner of the Mercedes, a woman, who said she doesn't always drive the car, said Conners.

On Monday officers still were trying to identify the driver and whether it was a man or woman.
