Three arrested on pot charges after Lake County traffic stop

A CHP officer who smelled "the overwhelming odor" of marijuana found the source when he stopped a pickup truck outside Middletown and discovered it contained 100 pot plants, the CHP reported Friday.

The traffic stop occurred shortly before 3 p.m. Thursday on Highway 175 near McKinley Drive. The plants were found beneath a protective cover in the back of the pickup.

The vehicle's three occupants presented medical marijuana recommendation cards but were arrested and booked into the Lake County Jail on suspicion of cultivating marijuana.

Among those arrested was Chan Chiem Saephan, 52, of Oakland.

Chan Tong Saephan, 50, of Suisun City, and Chiew Meuy Saephan, 26, of Oakland also were arrested on suspicion of the sale and transport of marijuana.

Bail was set for each person at $15,000.

The Lake County Sheriff's Narcotics Task Force helped take away the plants to be destroyed.
