Press Democrat wine writer Peg Melnik scopes out restaurant wine lists around the North Bay, looking for good value and the occasional splurge. This week's picks (prices are retail; restaurant markup varies):

Pedroncelli, 2012 Signature Selection Dry Ros?of Zinfandel, 13.9 percent alcohol, $12. A refreshing ros?with aromas and flavors of strawberry, watermelon and cream. Bright acidity. Crisp finish.

Smoke & Mirrors, 2010 California Red Wine, 14.9 percent, $23. A bright blend with tangy red fruit. Notes of herb and spice, with a hint of rhubarb. Juicy finish.

CrossBarn, 2009 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.1 percent, $40. A cab with good bones and ripe tannins. Notes of blackberry, cassis and bittersweet chocolate. Bright acidity. Nice length.

Duckhorn, 2007 Howell Mountain, Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.5 percent, $75. A complex cab with depth. Rich notes of blackberry, currant, herbs and spice. Good structure. Lingering finish.
