Transient suspected of exposing himself in Santa Rosa park

A Santa Rosa-area transient and registered sex offender was arrested Sunday on suspicion of exposing himself to people near Santa Rosa's DeMeo Park, police said.

James Edward Canada Sr., 49, was being held without bail late Sunday at the Sonoma County Jail on suspicion of indecent exposure and a parole violation, jail officials said.

At 11:30 a.m., a caller reported that a man approached a group of adults and children, pulled his pants down and began masturbating, Santa Rosa police officials said.

Another witness followed the man, later identified as Canada, and gave police a detailed description of him, Sgt. Lisa Banayat said.

Apparently trying to hide, the witness told police that Canada took off his jacket and went into the backyard of a home several blocks away on Boyce Street, Banayat said.

Police set up a perimeter around the area and Officer Mike Clark and his police dog partner, Taz, began searching backyards.

They found Canada nearby hiding under a piece of wood next to a garage in the backyard of a home on West Eighth Street, Banayat said.
