Cloverdale officials investigate series of RV campground fires

Cloverdale fire officials are investigating three small fires that occurred in the past three weeks at a Russian River-area RV campground.

"We're looking into the patterns. It could be coincidental but we're trying to put the puzzle together on what's going on out there," said Cloverdale Battalion Chief Rick Blackmon.

The fires have caused minimal damage at the Thousand Trails RV Park, said Blackmon. The park is a private campground on Geysers Road.

The first fire, Sept. 21, occurred in a bathroom. The second, on Oct. 9, started on the outside wall of a fifth-wheel recreational vehicle parked at the camp. The elderly man inside at the time was able to get out of his smoky vehicle without incident, said Blackmon.

Cloverdale firefighters returned to the Geysers Road campground at about 10:20 p.m. Monday to deal with a second bathroom fire.

In each case, people at the camp had put out the flames, which kept the fires small.

"But every one had potential," Blackmon said.
