Mendocino County law enforcement officers were searching the wooded hills west of Hopland on Thursday for a man who vanished after leaving his dead 5-month-old son at a Ukiah hospital.
Casimir George Janusz, 36, of Ukiah, brought the unresponsive boy to the hospital at 9:26 a.m. Wednesday, according to Ukiah police.
After it was determined the boy was dead, Janusz left the hospital without explanation, police said.
Police Capt. Trent Taylor said the cause of the child's death has not been determined.
After leaving the hospital, Janusz drove to his family's ranch in Hopland, where he abandoned the vehicle and disappeared, police said.
No one has seen him or heard from him since, police said. Taylor said Janusz's family reported him missing.
He said no other information about the incident is being released.
Ukiah police and Mendocino County sheriff's officials on Thursday afternoon were still combing the area around the family's rural compound, comprised of a small home and multiple trailers nestled among oak trees at the base of a small mountain range.
A family member at the location said he doesn't know what happened other than his nephew is dead and Janusz is missing. He said Janusz's father is distraught and not ready to talk publicly about what transpired.
Police ask that anyone with information about Janusz contact the department at 463-6262.
