Those big orange gourds really do float.

More than 300 children and adults turned out Saturday to behold them bobbing in a city pool at Santa Rosa's third annual Floating Pumpkin Patch. The event at the Ridgway Swim Center is "a family friendly alternative to going to the pumpkin patch," said Recreation Supervisor Don Hicks.

The Indian Summer afternoon seemed perfect for a dip in the pool, followed by face painting, pumpkin decorating and various carnival games. Sebastopol apple farmer Dave Hale, a regular Ridgway lap swimmer, donated the 250 pumpkins for the third straight year.
