A man who died trying to run across Highway 101 in Marin County on Tuesday night had reportedly just gotten out of Marin County Jail.
The man, whose name hasn't been released, was trying to cross four northbound highway lanes and then four southbound lanes about 8:30 p.m. in San Rafael.
He was hit by a Toyota Matrix as he entered the third northbound lane near North San Pedro Road, said CHP spokesman Officer Andy Barclay.
Witnesses told CHP officers it appeared the man also was hit by a second car, whose driver didn't stop.
Officers were trying to verify those reports Wednesday and find the possible second driver, said Barclay.
Ana Hernandez, 38, of Novato stopped after her Toyota hit the man, said Barclay.
The Press Democrat could not confirm that the victim had just been released from the nearby county jail, but Marin County media reports said the information came from a San Rafael fire official.
CHP officials asked anyone with information about the crash or the second driver to contact the CHP at (707) 551-4100.
