Fire engulfed a 25-foot pleasure boat at Spud Point Marina in Bodega Bay early Friday evening, causing significant hull damage that ultimately sank the vessel.

The fire was first reported to the Bodega Bay Coast Guard at 6:40 p.m. Bodega Bay fire fighters were alerted four minutes later.

Fire Capt. David Bynum said that when firefighters arrived at the scene, the boat was fully engulfed and bystanders were keeping the flames "at bay" using a Marina stand-pipe.

"The hull actually failed after we put the fire out," said Bynum. "The boats on either side suffered heat damage."

Bynum said bystanders reported hearing an explosion shortly before they saw flames, Bynum said.

Petty Officer Frank Carpenter, boatswain mate, said the water where the ship is moored is only about 10 feet deep. About four feet of the boat's bow was left sticking out of the water.
