Sonoma police Monday released a surveillance image of a man they suspect tried to steal a woman's purse inside a Safeway grocery store.

The man apparently walked up to the woman inside the West Napa Street store Saturday, told her he was going to take her purse and tried to yank it from her, Chief Bret Sackett said.

After a brief struggle, the man got the purse and took her wallet from it as he ran toward the exit, Sackett said.

Someone nearby pushed the man to the ground before he made it to the door, but he then got away, the chief said.

A Safeway employee then tackled the man outside the store, causing him to drop the woman's wallet and his black "A's" baseball cap, but he got away again and headed toward Fifth Street West, Sackett said.

Police were called at 8:25 p.m. and searched the area but did not find him.

Anyone with information about the case can call Sonoma Police at 996-3601.
