Man pleads not guilty to cousin's 2009 Cloverdale murder

A man extradited from Mexico in a 2009 Cloverdale slaying pleaded not guilty Tuesday to murder and drug charges and scheduled a preliminary hearing.

Augustin Alvarez-Pena, 42, is suspected in the shooting death of his cousin, Santos Alvarez, 24, of Cloverdale. Alvarez's body was found in a warehouse north of town along with dozens of pounds of marijuana and a handgun.

Authorities said Alvarez-Pena fled California after the killing. He was arrested by Mexican police in Jalisco earlier this year.

He pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder with a gun enhancement and a felony charge of possession of marijuana for sale. His preliminary hearing was set for Dec. 9 before Judge Gary Medvigy.

Prosecutors gave a three-hour time estimate for the hearing, which will determine if there is enough evidence to support the charges.
