Noxious odor forces coffeehouse evacuation in Santa Rosa

A'Roma Roasters Coffee & Tea in Santa Rosa was evacuated briefly Saturday afternoon after someone discharged a noxious spray in the business, city fire officials said.

Sometime after 2 p.m., employees of the business reported experiencing itchy, watery eyes, Battalion Chief Mike Jones said. A hazardous materials team arrived but was unable to determine what the substance was.

It appears that someone entered the store, discharged some kind of spray, then left through a rear door, he said. It's not clear who the person was or why the person would have done such a thing, Jones said. No one was seriously injured, he said.

Owner Kay Irvine said affected employees returned to work after firefighters finished ventilated the building.

Police checked out the scene, and the hazardous materials crew searched the area, but found nothing, she said.

"It's just one of those things that happens being in Railroad Square," Irvine said.

"There's always something."
