Santa Rosa mom arrested on child endangerment charges

Rohnert Park police arrested a 33-year-old Santa Rosa woman Sunday morning on suspicion of child endangerment after her two young children were found alone in a motel room.

Kendra Smith was booked into Sonoma County Jail on charges of child endangerment and possession of drug paraphernalia, a jail spokeswoman said. Her bail was $25,000.

Rohnert Park public safety officers assigned to a fire engine went to the Motel 6 in Rohnert Park about 9 a.m. Sunday to give diapers to the parents of 1- and 3-year-old children they had encountered before. One of the officers had purchased the supplies to help the struggling family, Sgt. Brandon Davidge said in a release.

But when they arrived, the older child answered the door and said the mother wasn't there. The infant was also in the room, Davidge said. The children's father is in jail, he said.

In the room, the officers found drug paraphernalia, drugs and weapons, which were accessible to the children, Davidge said.

While officers were there, Smith returned to the room and was arrested.

The children were taken into protective custody, Davidge said.

Smith was due in court Tuesday.
