A possibly intoxicated bicycle rider, traveling against traffic and failing to yield in a major Windsor intersection, remained hospitalized Monday following his collision with a delivery truck.

William Helsloot, 63, become pinned beneath the FedEx truck in the 11 a.m. collision Saturday at Old Redwood Highway and Windsor River Road.

Windsor firefighters used an inflatable air bag to raise the large vehicle off of the injured man. They also had to cut the wrecked bicycle from around one leg to free him, reported Windsor Sgt. Mark Essick.

The crash Monday remained under investigation, but several witnesses told officers the rider had been going west in the eastbound lane and didn't yield to oncoming traffic just before the collision, Essick said.

Officers said they also believe Helsloot had been drinking alcohol prior to his ride.

Distraught delivery van driver Michael Morrison, 41, of Santa Rosa was cooperating with the crash investigation, Essick said.

Helsloot was taken by ambulance to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with a broken leg and arm. He was in fair condition on Monday.
