Santa Rosa Councilwoman Robin Swinth was named the city's vice mayor by her colleagues Tuesday evening, replacing Councilwoman Erin Carlstrom in the role.

Swinth, 46, was chosen by the council in February to fill the vacant seat left by now Supervisor Susan Gorin.

The city's mayor serves a two-year term and cannot serve consecutive terms. The vice mayor, whose role is to perform the duties of the mayor when he or she is unavailable, serves for one year.

The council has typically rotated new council members into the largely ceremonial post every year.

Swinth, a trained engineer, married mother of two young children and former member of the city's Public Utilities Commission, has been praised for her work ethic and thoughtful questioning since joining the council.

The vote was unanimous followed by a polite round of applause. "Thanks for your support," she said.
