Body of missing Ukiah father found near Hopland

A Ukiah man who disappeared after taking the body of his 5-month-old son to a hospital Oct. 16 was found dead Wednesday of an apparent self-inflicted firearm wound, the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office said.

Casimir Janusz, 36, was reported missing Oct. 16, and several law enforcement agencies conducted a three-day search in an area that was about a quarter-mile from where he was ultimately found.

Janusz was believed to have driven to his family's rural property west of Hopland after leaving the hospital, police said. His vehicle was found on the property.

At about 1:46 p.m. Wednesday, the Sheriff's Office received a report about a dead body found on a rural piece of private property in the 300 block of MacMillan Drive in Hopland.

A woman told sheriff's deputies she had been walking her dog on the property when she encountered the body in a brushy area. Sheriff's investigators soon identified the body as Janusz.

Sheriff's officials said in a statement that an autopsy has been scheduled for today as part of the coroner's investigation "but initial scene information suggests Janusz died as the result of suicide with a firearm."

No other information was available Wednesday evening.
