A sellout crowd of more than 300 was on hand Saturday at the 13th annual Derby Days party as the Council on Aging raised more than $250,000, by far a record for the Kentucky Derby-themed event. The money will sponsor Meals on Wheels programs for area seniors.

The council had hoped to raise about $200,000, President and CEO Marrianne McBride said, but the event exceeded expectations in part thanks to a handful of unusually generous donors: two who agreed to give $20,000 each, and two bidders offering $10,000 each for a package including a gourmet meal with Kosta Browne wine at Santa Rosa's McDonald Mansion.

McBride said every $1,000 raised feeds one senior for a whole year by supplementing the shortfall in funding provided by government sources.
