West county wineries honor moms on Sunday

Eight west county wineries are offering a lovely alternative to Mother's Day brunch in a crowded restaurant.

From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, moms will receive a complimentary wine tasting, a sweet nibble and a pretty flower. Visit all eight and it will make a bouquet.

Participating wineries include Balletto Vineyards and Winery (5700 Occidental Road, Santa Rosa); Graton Ridge Cellars (3561 Gravenstein Highway N., Sebastopol); Russian River Vineyards (5700 Highway 116, Forestville); Taft Street Winery (2030 Barlow Lane, Sebastopol); Dutton Estate Winery (8757 Green Valley Road, Sebastopol); Hanna Winery & Vineyards (5353 Occidental Road, Santa Rosa); Hook & Ladder Winery Tasting Room (104 N. Main St., Sebastopol) and Martin Ray Winery (2191 Laguna Road, Santa Rosa).

Hook & Ladder's tasting room, which shares space with Main Stage West, will be closing at 3 p.m., for the theater's matinee presentation of "The Shape of Things."

Open House at Redwood Hill: This weekend, Redwood Hill Farm hosts the first of its annual spring farm tours, a beloved Mother's Day tradition, on both Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The word "tour" doesn't really convey the scope of this event. It's a celebration, with a chance to play with the baby goats, mingle with the other animals, try your hand at milking a mama goat, chat with employees and sample the full line of cheese, kefir and yogurt. You can shop at the farm store (bring a cooler with ice), which includes T-shirts, books, goat milk soap and all the farm's other products and more.

Da Puna Bruddahs will perform Saturday and Sunday. There's no admission charge and mothers will receive a special gift, but it is important to carpool. Parking on the one-lane country road that leads to the farm is very limited.

A second spring farm tour takes places on the second weekend in June.

Redwood Hill Farm is located at 5480 Thomas Road, Sebastopol. For complete directions and information about the farm, its award-winning practices and its equally awarded products, visit redwoodhill.com.
