Mendocino woman accused of stealing man's water bill payment

A Mendocino woman was arraigned Friday for allegedly posing as a Mendocino Coast Water Works employee and making off with a customer's $2,700 check.

Amica Wetzler, 33, remained in the Mendocino County jail Friday on $15,000 bail, according to the Sheriff's Office. She is charged with theft by fraud and grand theft.

The victim of the theft was at the water company on Monday to pay a bill when he was contacted by Wetzler, according to the Sheriff's Office.

She said she was an employee, took his payment and gave him a handwritten receipt, authorities said.

The following day, a water works employee called the victim to discuss the outstanding bill. When he explained he had paid the bill and had a receipt, the employee notified the Sheriff's Office, which identified Wetzler as the suspect, authorities said.

Most of the money was recovered, they said.
