Frank and Helen (Nafe) Dettling, celebrated their 65th anniversary at Skyline Park in Napa. The event featured a lunch buffet, well-wishing toasts, and the gifts of a top hat for the groom and veil for the bride. The affair was arranged by their children, Michael, Patricia, and James. Around 75 guests were in attendance.
The couple met as students at St. Vincent De Paul High School in 1948, and married shortly after at St. Vincent's parish in Petaluma. Frank worked for Safeway for 36 years as a truck driver. Helen worked with several small businesses in Petaluma as a bookkeeper. Over the years they have practiced their faith at both St. Vincent and St. James Catholic churches, and have been very active with local camping clubs and emergency radio responder groups.
Their love of the outdoors led them to purchase a vacation property in Trinity County, where they hosted camping and off-roading trips for friends and family for the past 40 years.
Family members include: son Michael Dettling of Pasadena; daughter Patricia Bak and husband Frank, of Waukegan, Ill; and son James Dettling and his wife, Toni, of Rohnert Park. They have four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
According to their son, Michael, the secret to their long and happy marriage is pursuing common interests and making joint decisions. Their children wish them continued health and happiness for many, many years to come.
