Car hits Petaluma power pole, starts fires and knocks out power

A car crashed into a power pole Saturday afternoon starting three small fires and knocking out power to more than 100 customers east of Petaluma.

The motorist had to be extricated from his vehicle and suffered minor injuries, said authorities. His name was not available.

The 4:15 p.m. crash at Stage Gulch Road and Lakeville Highway brought down power lines, said Petaluma Fire Battalion Chief Russ Rasmussen.

Stage Gulch Roadroad was closed while PG&E crews worked on the lines and was expected to reopen at 5 a.m. today, he said.

Three spot fires started by sparks burned under an acre of combined fields, said CalFire.

Initially, 133 customers were without power. By 9:30 p.m. that number was down to 23, PG&E said.
