Smith: Elliott North is a Prune Packer now

Too cold to think of baseball just now.

But lovers of the game might be warmed to know that the historic, reborn Healdsburg Prune Packers have signed their first player onto a team that will bring high-level collegiate summer baseball to Sonoma County next year.

At the helm will be Petaluma's Joey Gomes, a formidable player and trainer and brother of Jonny Gomes, who just helped the Boston Red Sox take the World Series.

The Prune Packers, new to the Golden State Collegiate Baseball League, will play at Healdsburg's Recreation Park. The team just signed its first player for 2014:

Healdsburg High alum Elliott North of Concordia University in Portland.

Go Prunes.

THERE ARE TREES and then there are the Christmas trees offered up by baseball players at Santa Rosa High.

Kids on coach Paige Dumont's team obtain trees from Oregon and sell only some of them. The rest they give away to people in need.

Anyone interested in requesting a complimentary free tree can contact Dumont at baseketball21@mail.com.
