A part-time Lake County Sheriff's deputy was shot Friday morning by his wife, authorities said.

Paula Ann Piveronas, 63, of Lakeport called 911 just after 7 a.m. to report she'd shot her husband several times, said Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Steve Brooks.

The District Attorney's Office identified the deputy as Bob Piveronas, 66, who is employed seasonally as a marine patrol deputy.

Paula Piveronas was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, assault with a firearm and infliction of corporal injury on a spouse.

She's being held in the Lake County jail on $700,000 bail.

District Attorney Don Anderson said he believes Piveronas was shot twice and that his condition is serious.

Officials did not say what may triggered the shooting, or what type of weapon was used. Anderson said his investigators are still working on the case.

The shooting stunned the couple's next door neighbor, Sally Manthey.

"It's just a shock really," she said. "They seemed to be getting along."

In an April 2012 Facebook posting, Bob Piveronas wrote: "Happily Married To The Woman of My Dreams, Paula Ann!!"

Manthey said she doesn't recall ever hearing the couple fight.

She said she'd visited with them during a memorial service for a neighbor a week ago and that Bob Piveronas was attentive, as seemed usual, to his wife. She saw them again on Sunday when some visiting family was leaving.

"They seemed to be enjoying their company and having a good time with them," Manthey said.

She said she liked both Bob and Paula Piveronas but that Bob was the more friendly of the two.

"It's just really peculiar, this whole thing. Really odd," Manthey said.

Manthey said she was sleeping soundly and didn't hear the gunshots. She found out what happened after going outside to get her newspaper.
