SANTA ROSA: Rose Society offers tips on rose pruning

Now that the big holiday push is winding down it's time to sharpen your pruning shears and listen up.

The Redwood Empire Rose Society will hold a free rose pruning lesson from 9 a.m. to noon January 4 and 11. Barbara Ellis, a consultant with the American Rose Society, will lead the class, which includes demonstrations.

The class is open to non-members. It will be held at the Luther Burbank Art & Garden Center, 2050 Yulupa Ave., Santa Rosa. For information email ruthbrowning@sbcglobal.net.

SONOMA: Olive expert shows how to cure fruit

Don't let your ripened olives go to waste. Learn how to cure and de-bitter your crop and make your fruit edible without lye.

Don Landis, an expert in all things olive, will give a free class from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 5 at Cline Cellars winery, 24737 Arnold Dr.

Attendees will receive a discount in the Cline tasting room. Although the class is free, an RSVP is required by calling 940-4025.
