Body of missing Clearlake woman found in field

Authorities recovered the body of a mentally-impaired Clearlake woman who went missing near her home on the Fourth of July, police said Friday.

Julie Diehl, 44, who suffered severe dementia, walked away from her Moose Trail residence about 9 a.m. Thursday and was reported missing about six hours later when she could not be found, police Sgt. Nick Bennett said.

Because of the extremely hot weather, police called firefighters to help in a search. They summoned a CalFire helicopter returning to Cobb Mountain from a fire and asked for assistance. Within seven minutes of arriving in the area, the helicopter crew spotted Diehl's body in a field about 200 yards from Moose Trail, Bennett said.

There was no evidence of foul play but a death investigation is ongoing, Bennett said.

Bennett urged anyone with a missing person, especially a child or mentally-challenged person, to contact police immediately.
