NOVATO — A Marin County man with eight previous drunken driving convictions has been sentenced to 24 years to life in the death of a 9-year-old authorities say he hit with his motorcycle.

Judge Terrence Boren also ordered 44-year-old Edward Schaefer on Tuesday to pay more than a million dollars in restitution to the family of Melody Osheroff.

Boren said Schaefer's repeated drunken driving convictions played a big part in the sentencing decision.

Authorities say Schaefer was drunk when he struck Melody and her father, 41-year-old Aaron, in May 2009. Aaron Osheroff had to have a leg amputated.

Schaefer was convicted in May on charges including second-degree murder and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

He apologized before Tuesday's sentencing, saying he was "devastated" by the crash.
