Alabama grand jury doesn't indict JaMarcus Russell on drug charge

MOBILE, Ala. — A grand jury in Alabama has declined to indict former Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell following the investigation of a drug charge.

Defense attorney Donald Briskman said Friday that the prosecution office handling the Mobile County grand jury confirmed that no indictment was returned.

He says Russell is working out and the dismissal of the case allows Russell to proceed with his plan to return to the pros.

Russell was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance, a drink containing codeine syrup. The defense contended it belonged to another person in Russell's home.

A prep star in Mobile who also was a standout at LSU, Russell was the No. 1 NFL draft choice in 2007 but released by Oakland after three disappointing seasons.
