O?Reilly Media announced Thursday it will begin distributing books for Microsoft Press, the publishing arm of the world?s largest software company.
Microsoft publishes technical books about its line of products. The software giant will get access to the Sebastopol-based company?s digital publishing network, which will allow it to sell and display book content online and via mobile devices.
?There are more than 40 million people walking around the world with a mobile phone or digital device which essentially gives them a bookstore in their pocket. That?s an enormous opportunity for publishers today,? said Tim O?Reilly, founder and chief executive of O?Reilly.
O?Reilly will also work with Microsoft to manufacture and distribute paper-bound books. The partnership initially applies to the distribution of content in North America, but eventually will be rolled out globally.
