An 85-year-old Santa Rosa woman was killed Wednesday afternoon in the driveway of her home when a car rolled backwards and pinned her to another vehicle.
In a terrible coincidence, authorities said Ruth Camilli was on her way to a funeral when she was killed.
The accident occurred around 2:30 p.m. in the 1800 block of Will Scarlet Lane in the Sherwood Forest neighborhood between Montgomery Village and Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.
A car had just been parked in Camilli's driveway on Will Scarlet Lane when "the victim walked to the rear of the vehicle," said Santa Rosa Police Sgt. Rich Celli.
"It began to roll backwards. She was struck, pinned against the second vehicle parked in the street," he said.
The accident was witnessed by relatives, he said, who along with Camilli "were on their way to a wake to grieve another family member's death one week prior."
Police said after the driver got out of the older model Mercedes—Benz, it rolled backwards down the driveway incline into a late model CRV Honda. Police did not release the driver's name.
"We're trying to figure out whether it was mechanical failure or failure to park the vehicle," Celli said.
Celli called it a "terrible, tragic " accident that was devastating to family members who rushed to the aid of the injured wounded woman.
She was taken to Memorial Hospital, three blocks away, but did not survive.
