A 19-year-old Sebastopol woman suffered serious injuries when she drove into the intersection of Occidental and High School roads Saturday morning and was struck broadside, the CHP said.

The driver, Lauren Benck, was northbound on High School Road when she reportedly drove through a stop sign and into the path of an eastbound Ford Taurus, Officer Robert Powers said.

"She took the impact right at the driver's side door," and had to be extricated through the passenger-side door, Powers said.

Benck told authorities her brakes failed, the CHP said.

The 10:41 a.m. collision blocked the intersection until crews could clear the wreckage, the CHP said.

Benck was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital for treatment of a possible broken hip and serious facial lacerations, the CHP said.

Neither the other driver, Julie Pozzi, 34, of Santa Rosa nor her passengers, Jorge Mendoza and Alejandro Gonzalez, also of Santa Rosa, were injured, the CHP said.
