Santa Rosa man arrested for suspected DUI after four-car Highway 12 crash

A suspected drunken driver smashed into four cars on Highway 12 in east Santa Rosa Tuesday evening before flipping his car, Santa Rosa police reported.

The driver had turned onto Highway 12 from Acacia Lane at about 5:20 p.m. He sped up but quickly approached slowed traffic, lost control and hit four vehicles, reported Sgt. Craig Schwartz.

The driver then hit the median strip and rolled his car.

Officers closed the westbound Highway 12 lanes for 70 minutes of the evening commute, allowing emergency crews to work.

Driver Brendan Vandenbos, 32, of Santa Rosa was taken to a local hospital with a complaint of pain.

He also was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving. Vandenbos was released from the Sonoma County Jail after posting bail.

Two other drivers hit in the crash complained of pain, Schwartz said.
