A Petaluma man driving on Highway 101 early Friday lost control, flipped his car and was trapped before he was freed and later arrested as a suspected drunken driver.

Inderjit S. Cheema, 34, suffered injuries and was flown to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital in the 12:02 a.m. crash.

The CHP reported Cheema was driving north on the highway just south of the Sonoma County line when he changed lanes as an unsafe speed to pass a slower vehicle.

Because of his level of intoxication the driver lost control of his 2001 Honda Civic and crashed.

The Civic flipped onto its roof and landed off of the shoulder in grass.

He couldn't get out and was cut loose by Novato Fire Department firefighters.

The highway was closed completely for several minutes to allow a Reach medical helicopter to land.

Cheema was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving.
