Forestville food bank receives 1,500-box donation of Girl Scout cookies

A giddy troop of Brownies and scouts from East Palo Alto delivered 1,500 boxes of Girl Scout cookies to Food for Thought/Sonoma County AIDS Food Bank in Forestville last weekend.

The special delivery happened because a food-bank benefactor who also likes to support the Girl Scouts wasn't solicited to buy cookies this year.

With the 2011 sale over, he phoned the Girl Scouts to ask if he could still purchase cookies. Told he could, he ordered 125 cases — $6,000 worth.

He asked which troop is California's poorest and was told it's Scout/Brownie Troop 6173 of East Palo Alto. The man said he'd like that troop credited with the sale, and he asked if the girls of 6173 might like to personally deliver the cookies to another of his causes — Food for Thought.

That's why last Saturday, a fancy bus was loaded up with 23 East Palo Alto scouts, several adults and all those cookies, and driven to Forestville. Food bank staffers treated the girls like queens.

All 1,500 boxes of cookies will go out to Food for Thought clients as treats — except for the one box set aside for a good man.
