County filmmaker wins Beard award

BAY AREA - The 2011 James Beard Foundation Awards were announced last month in a ceremony in New York City, when several Bay Area chefs and a Sonoma County filmmaker were recognized for their work.

Filmmaker and director Paul Swensen of Santa Rosa won an award for the PBS cooking show "Avec Eric," showcasing chef Eric Ripert of Le Bernardin in New York City.

Swensen and co-director Geoffrey Drummond shot Ripert on location in New York, Tuscany and Northern California, where the chef visited Flowers Vineyard and Hog Island Oysters, among other Sonoma County locations.

San Francisco native Grace Young won best International Cookbook for "Stir-Frying to the Sky's Edge: The Ultimate Guide to Mastery, with Authentic Recipes and Stories."

Michael Tusk of Quince in San Francisco won the award for Best Chef: Pacific, and Charles Phan of The Slanted Door in San Francisco was recognized by an award for Who's Who of Food & Beverage in America.
