EDITOR: The singalong Messiah in Santa Rosa may have been the longest ("Singing in the season," Sunday), but I participated in what may have been the largest singalong.

I was house-sitting in Winchester, England, about 20 years ago, when I heard about a nationwide singalong Messiah to be sung in every cathedral in the land at the same time. I borrowed some music and joined the huge crowd at Winchester Cathedral.

When the baton was raised at St. Paul's Cathedral in London, all the cathedrals in England began their singalong. In a full cathedral, it took two conductors (one half-way down the aisle) to keep the singers together. The national radio tuned in to various cathedrals as the evening wore on.

It was a thrilling experience to know that many people were singing this magnificent work at the same time.
