Bodies found in pot garden near Sonoma-Napa line

Napa County officials are trying to identify two bodies found in a clandestine marijuana garden in the hills west of Rutherford.

The men had been dead for some time, "which is part of what's making the identification difficult," Napa County Sheriff's Capt. Tracey Stuart said.

Coroner's staff were using DNA and dental records to identify them, she said.

A tip led a team from the Napa Special Investigations Bureau to hike into the area on July 1, Stuart said, and the bodies were found in a garden of about 3,000 immature pot plants.

Detectives found signs that people had been camping in the area, ostensibly to tend the plants. The team returned the next day with coroner's officials to retrieve the corpses.

The garden, near the Sonoma County line east of Sugarloaf Ridge, was concealed in thick brush deep in the hills on private land. The property owners had no knowledge of the marijuana garden, Stuart said.

Detectives believe the garden was run by people affiliated with a Mexico-based drug organization.

Agents returned to the garden Wednesday and destroyed the plants.
