Pair arrested in Petaluma copper thefts

Two men suspected of trying to steal copper went to jail early Monday after they were arrested at a PG&E yard in east Petaluma, police reported.

One of the suspects, Jeffrey Crespo, 41, of San Francisco was out on bail and due in court next week regarding his May arrest at a different Petaluma PG&E yard involving copper theft, according to court records.

Petaluma officers went to the Corona Road yard at about 12:45 a.m. after getting a call about suspicious activity.

They surrounded the yard and found two men just outside the PG&E fence. They also found a stack of copper wire, tools and other property that had been taken from the yard, Sgt. Steve Nelson said.

Anthony Magda, 29, of Cotati and Crespo were arrested on suspicion of burglary and possessing stolen property. They were taken to the Sonoma County Jail.

Crespo has two prior felony convictions, in 2003 and 2004, involving theft.

Officers also arrested Magda for possession of two stolen mountain bikes, worth thousands of dollars, Sgt. Marty Frye said.
