Rohnert Park City Council to vote on dropping election

With three of its members running unopposed for re-election, the Rohnert Park City Council will vote today whether to cancel the November council election or simply reappoint the incumbents.

Mayor Jake Mackenzie, Councilman Joe Callinan and Councilwoman Gina Belforte all are seeking another term.

Reappointing them and cancelling the election would save about $30,000 said City Manager Gabe Gonzalez.

"It's the council's discretion," Gonzalez said.

Pastor Chip Worthington, a Stop the Casino 101 group leader and a council critic, took out papers to run but didn't file them.

Belforte will be absent at today's special meeting, Gonzalez said, and the "rule of necessity" will govern the vote.

That means Mackenzie and Callinan will recuse themselves, citing conflicts of interest. Then Councilman Amy Ahanotu and Councilwoman Pam Stafford will draw straws to choose Mackenzie or Callinan as the third vote, creating a quorum.
