Santa Rosa police search for suspect in teen's Juilliard Park rape

Santa Rosa police Friday were searching for a man suspected of raping a teenager in Juilliard Park.

A 17-year-old girl reported that a man attacked her at about 8:30 p.m. Thursday in the downtown park off Santa Rosa Avenue, Sgt. David Linscomb said.

The teen, who was at the park as it grew dark, asked a man to use his cellphone to call for a ride, Linscomb said. The man handed her his phone and then grabbed her, dragging her under a nearby tree by the bocce courts, Linscomb said. He pulled her clothes off and raped her, he said.

The man paused during the assault when a group of men nearby called out and asked what he was doing, Linscomb said.

"He stopped or was distracted enough by them yelling. She was able to get out from underneath him," Linscomb said.

The teen got away, walked to the Roxy Theater and called for a ride. She called police later Friday night.

The man was described as white with brown hair and green eyes and about 6 feet tall. He appeared to be in his 20s. He was wearing gray-and-black plaid knee-length shorts with a cargo pocket on the leg, and a light-colored short-sleeved button-up shirt.

"We are hoping that someone who may have seen something might come forward," Linscomb said.

Anyone with information about the case can call Det. Jeneane Kucker with the Santa Rosa Police Department's sexual assault unit at 543-3595.
