EDITOR: I'd like to correct some misstatements about Planned Parenthood that were contained in a recent letter ("Komen grants," Tuesday)
Planned Parenthood Shasta Pacific provides a wide range of affordable preventive health care services to more than 100,000 women, men and families in Northern California each year. Ninety-eight percent of its health care services are breast and cervical cancer screening, birth control, STD testing and treatment, prenatal care and HIV testing.
Breast cancer screenings are an essential part of Planned Parenthood's work. Each year, Planned Parenthood Shasta Pacific conducts more than 13,000 breast exams. All breast exams that are suspicious or abnormal are then referred to a mammogram provider. If breast cancer is found, Planned Parenthood helps its clients manage the treatment process.
I am so grateful that Planned Parenthood has a strong presence in our community, providing comprehensive, quality health care services regardless of an individual's insurance status or ability to pay. Please join me in continuing to support Planned Parenthood Shasta Pacific with your financial contributions and advocacy.
