Fundraiser Saturday for Sonoma County soldier wounded in Afghanistan

A Cotati bar will host a daylong fundraiser on Saturday for Army Sgt. Monte Bernardo, who lost parts of three limbs in a bomb blast two months ago in Afghanistan.

Bernardo, 30, who grew up in Petaluma, is undergoing a lengthy rehabilitation at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md. He lost both legs and his left hand in the July 4 blast.

The first annual Sgt. Monte Bernardo Fundraiser will include a pool tournament, raffle and silent auction from 10 a.m. Saturday until 2 a.m. Sunday at Friar Tucks Pub & Spirits, 8201 Old Redwood Highway in Cotati.

The bar will donate 20 percent of all food sales and all of the $20 pool tournament buy-in to the Bernardo Recovery Fund, set up by the soldier's family to cover expenses not met by insurance and the Army.

The fund has raised $25,000 toward a goal of $100,000.
