Apparent suicide at Veterans Home of Yountville

Napa County authorities Monday were investigating the apparent suicide of an 88-year-old man at the Veterans Home of Yountville.

Staff members called the Sheriff's Office at 12:51 p.m. and reported the man wasn't breathing, Sheriff's Sgt. Doug Pace said.

The man appeared to have killed himself, Pace said. A gun was on the floor, he said.

Veterans Home staff reached by phone late Monday declined to comment.

The residential care facility on California Drive is the largest veterans home in the United States, according to the California Department of Veteran Affairs website. The facility houses about 1,100 aged or disabled veterans.

Further details were unavailable.
