Emergency dispatchers said reports of a gunshot wound in the remote community of Covelo on Wednesday night stemmed from an accidental shooting.
But it was glass from a vehicle window - not a bullet - that injured the man involved, authorities said.
The man took a rifle with him out to the forest to cut some wood and accidentally discharged the weapon in his vehicle, blasting the passenger-side window glass into his face, Mendocino County Sheriff's Capt. Kurt Smallcomb said.
The man was treated at a local hospital for a nosebleed and was released, Smallcomb said.
