EDITOR: Come on, Sebastopol. The proposed doubling of water and sewer rates ("Sebastopol may double sewer, water rates," Friday), by accelerating the repair schedule of the city's water and sewer system, shows a high degree of insensitivity to the current economic challenges facing many people.
The people of Sebastopol have been generous to city management by allowing taxation of all utility bills, such as PG&E, Comcast, AT&T, etc. Many communities have not passed this additional taxation, and it has really helped keep Sebastopol city finances in check during this economic downturn.
There was no mention in the article of rates returning to lower levels when the repairs are made. I'm really relieved that Proposition 218 facilitates voter feedback, because I think this issue needs it.
