Fares for Alaska Airlines' Santa Rosa flights rose 7.2 percent in the third quarter of 2011, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The average round-trip from Santa Rosa cost $272.70, compared to $254.47 for the same period in 2010.

Fares for all U.S. domestic flights increased 6.2 percent during the quarter. The average U.S. fare was $361, compared to $340 in 2010.

Fares include the ticket price, airport fees and taxes. They don't include baggage fees or frequent flyer discounts.

Higher fuel costs and fewer available seats are behind the rising fares, according to industry analysts.

Seattle-based Alaska operates five flights a day from Santa Rosa to Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland and Las Vegas. So far this year, ridership is up almost 4 percent over last year.

On June 4, Alaska will drop its Santa Rosa-to-Las Vegas service and begin daily flights to San Diego. The carrier also will add a third Santa Rosa flight to Los Angeles four days a week from June 4 until Aug. 25.
