Santa Rosa man, 20, arrested in teen's Juilliard Park rape

A 20-year-old Santa Rosa man was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of raping a teen girl nearly six weeks ago at Santa Rosa's Juilliard Park, authorities said.

DNA evidence linked Michael Augustine Byrnes to the Sept. 6 crime, when a man grabbed a 17-year-old girl, dragged her under a tree, removed her clothes and raped her, Sgt. Michael Clark said.

Officers arrested Byrnes in Santa Rosa on Tuesday and he was being held on $100,000 bail on suspicion of rape and additional sexual assault charges, Clark said.

The girl was at the Santa Rosa Avenue park near downtown at about 8:30 p.m. when she asked a man if she could use his phone, Clark said. He handed her the phone, then attacked her.

The assault ended only after a group of young men called out to her assailant and asked what he was doing, prompting him to get off the teen and leave, Clark said.
